I decided to write my critique paper on asthma. As I was searching for an article I came across many articles all with a different variety of titles. Some where studies, some where personal stories, some where just informative and some where odd stories like, "Did Facebook Trigger an Asthma Attack?". I choose a magazine article in the New York Times titled "Asthma Kills". The reason why I decided to write it on asthma was because growing up I saw my younger brother suffer from asthma, it was horrible seeing him experience an asthma attack, it was as if he could not breathe. At the time I didn't know much about it. He also spent some time hospitalized, at times for weeks. I remember feeling so helpless. So when I came across the title "Asthma Kills" I knew I wanted to use it. To my understanding asthma was something that my brother was going to live with for the rest of his life, but never really knew that he could die from it.

The article I read was very interesting it had a combination of a personal story, it was informative and it was helpful. This article was very sad in the introduction, to read about anyone losing their life is such a tragedy, specially when that person seem to think he was well. Asthma is a disease that has no cure but can very well be maintained under control with the help of a physician and proper medication. There was a couple of things I read in the article that I was somewhat familiar with. But there where many more that I was not familiar with. I wasn't familiar with the fact that there are different kinds of asthma. In my brothers situation he has asthma with allergies to almost everything. A very alarming thing I read was the overuse in beta-agonist bronchodilators, my brother was like that, at any sign of struggling to breathe my brother would pull out his albuterol. I did not know that an increase in use could be a sign to a bigger problem. I considered myself almost a pro in asthma. But this article certainly proved me wrong.

I am glad that I came across this article I certainly did not many things that affect asthmatic persons. The first thing I plan on doing is having my brother read the article. I know very well that he isn't too informed on the subject. And secondly, I want to go with my brother to his next appointment and have some questions answered. And finally, since I have children and I know that asthma runs in my family, this is also going to help me keep my children away from some things that can or might trigger any kind of asthma sign. Of course I will not go to crazy, but will keep a closer eye on the pollen count in the air and maintain my home free of dust mites or anything that can affect their health. I believe this article was very helpful to me considering that I have an asthmatic brother and I have children. This is an article that should be read by everyone.
