Social Structure Theory

An example of a social structure theory would be COP or community policing. Community policing is done within local, state, and federal jurisdictions. The main elements of community policing are to build stronger and self-sufficient communities, that do not thrive off of crime or disorder, (Kelling 1988 p. 3-4).

In community policing it requires the participation of the local government, the business leaders, public and private agencies, homeowners, churches, schools, hospitals, as well as the local police departments in order to address issues of crime, disorder, and neglect within the communities, (Kelling, 1988 p.4).

Over time police do find tactics and strategies that help in controlling, preventing, and reducing the fear of crime, as well as improving the liveliness of the neighborhoods. When people trust that the police are genuinely interested in their issues as a community they will begin to trust them and let them in as part of that community, (Kelling, 1988 p. 4-5).

Social Process Theory

An example of social process theory would be an educational enrichment program. The educational enrichment program I researched was the After School Education and Safety or ASES program. ASES has several elements but first and foremost they make sure to state the program is only to be aligned with and not a repeat of the content of school for the day was. They are wanting a safe physical as well as an emotional environment so that the child can establish and have the opportunity to build relationships. The purpose of the ASES program is offer the opportunity in merging school reform and community resources, (California Department of Education, Oct. 2011).

There are two main elements with the ASES program. The first element is and educational and literacy element. This element must provide tutoring and/or homework assistance that will assist children with meeting the state standards in at least one or more of the core academic subjects. Some of the core academic subjects are: reading, language arts, math, history, social studies, or science, (California Department of Education, Oct. 2011).

The second element is the educational enrichment element. This element should offer an array of services, programs, or activities that would complement what the school is already teaching the
