1. This is a photo of child labor in textile mills. It appears to be around the late 1800s to the early 1900s. There are only two white, little boys around the age 6 or 7. The are on some machine working. It was probably dangerous as it looks in the photo.

2. During this period, child labor was favored. The families needed every able bodied members to find work to support the family, despite the age. This let to the high rise in child labor in factories. Children were not treated well, overworked, and underpaid for a long time before anyone tried to change things for them. Since children had small hands and figure, they would be more likely work in more dangerous positions with dangerous machines. There were people in this time period that strongly advocated the abolishment of child labor, or at least the improvement of conditions. Factories favored child labor, therefore supported their reasoning with ideas that it was good fore the economy and sometimes parents were forced into think that.

3.This may have not been the best photo, but seems very convincing and is able to get sympathy from people since they were children. According to this picture, you can't tell how many females or other ethnic groups of children were there. Were there minorities? Did they get hurt badly? Were the fed properly? Did they get breaks in between?

1. There is an angel-like figure that symbolizes that God had told them to occupy the entire North American continent. As she moves towards the west, Indians, buffalos, wild horses, bears and other animals flee. There are also railroads in the back predicting that one day railroads will connect both east and west, therefore the Manifest Destiny would be a success.

2. Manifest Destiny refers to the religious belief that the United States was to expand from the Atlantic to Pacific commanded by God. The United States today exists because of the strength and the motivation to expand and grow as a country. The painting portrays variety types of expansions in America at the time. You can see the Atlantic and Pacific on opposite sides, railroads, and an angel holding a Bible and bringing light to the darker part of the country, while leaving the east bright.

3. I think it was effective, because it obviously led to civilization in the west. I think the image could have been better if they showed more variety of people; people who favored the idea. Who did not favor the idea? Who in specific favored the idea? How did this idea come to place?
