Chapter 2 Key Concept 2 Part 1: The East Hemisphere

The Shang and Zhou periods were dynasties that grew in the Eastern Hemisphere. The Shang pioneered the production of silk and made pottery using the wheel even though it wasn't made by them. The Zhou dynasty would commonly associate their Chief Deity as "Heaven" and the monarch as "The Son of Heaven" and lastly call the rule of the monarch as "The Mandate of Heaven." There were two school of thoughts that greatly affected the makeup of the governments of their time. The first one was Confucianism which was a school of thought that stressed benevolence, avoidance of violence, justice, rationalism, loyalty, and dignity. Also there was Daoism which was school of thought that sought to stop warfare and urged humanity to follow the "Dao" or path to avoid struggles.
