Social Experiment

Right after I got out of class, I went straight to the mall to conduct the social

experiment that I was assign. The social experiment that I was supposed to

perform was just too simply stand in the middle of a room and do nothing. I guess

by doing this, it allows you to take a look at other people’s behaviors as you watch

them and observe their reactions.

I went to the closet place that I could think of, which happen to be the

Westfield Topanga mall. As I’m walking through the mall, I started to feel

extremely anxious and nervous because I knew it would be really awkward just

standing there. There were a lot of people in the mall, so I knew that I was going

to be really nervous.

As I’m walking through the mall, I figured out the perfect place to do the

experiment. I ended up going to the Apple store. I chose the Apple store because I

knew a lot of people would be there, or at least walk by there. I was really

intimidated about just standing in front of such a busy store like Apple. Even

though I was nervous and intimidated about going forward with the experiment, I

ended up going through with it anyways because I wanted to see what other

people’s reaction would be.

I stood right next to the entrance, facing the customers that were using the

store phones. Also by the entrance, were about 3-4 employees standing in front

of the entrance. One of the employees notice me standing by the entrance and

kept asking if I needed any help, or if I was lost or something. She then walked

away after I told her that I didn’t need any help. I began to see some of the

customers looking at me like they were confused as to why I was just standing by

the entrance and didn’t walk into the store. In my head, I was freaking out

because it felt like everyone was looking at me like I was crazy.

After about ten minutes or so, I finally just walked away. I felt extremely

uncomfortable when I saw a group of people staring at me. But it wasn’t as bad as

I thought it was going to be. I think the people that were in the store were

uncomfortable as well because, they were looking at me with confusion when I

didn’t walk into the store. For the most part, I enjoyed seeing other people’s

reaction when they saw me doing nothing. The experiment was interesting, but I

don’t think I’ll ever do it again.
