Gattaca was directed by Andrew Niccol in 1997. This film offers a entertaining look into the future of genetic engineering. The way Niccol did the film there are no answers found within. It makes the viewer ask questions regarding the progress of society and genetic engineering. Niccol view point of genetic engineering in society I agree with. That genetic engineering in some circumstances is a huge benefits in society it also has its drawback. By using genetic engineering we lose what makes us human. The film does bring up an important question about the society and ethics. The film makes you question the nature of humanity and perfection while altering the fundamental nature of mankind. The film made the viewer's understand that genetic engineering was used to create perfection. Those individuals are considered normal in that society and they are more desirable. Because of genetic engineering they are more desirable in careers and in powerful positions. There are some individuals present in the film that did not have genetic engineering done. Like the main character Vincent. In that society genetically engineered people are considered normal, while traditional person is considered imperfect or undesirable.

This brings up one central question about genetic engineering. Is it ethically appropriate to use genetic engineering to avoid defects like Alzheimer's disease, Meniere's disease and others like it? Is it appropriate to enhance physical trait as well? The film raises some concerns about genetic engineering as well as some benefits. There are many who would reject it while, others would be for it. I'll do an analysis on the benefits towards genetic engineering, as well as the specific impacts this has on present-day realities. One of the most promising benefits of human genetic engineering is gene therapy. "Gene therapy is the medical treatment of a disease by repairing or replacing defective genes or introducing therapeutic genes to fight the disease". (meditours.org.) By using gene therapy on disease like Alzheimer's and Meniere's would be things of the past. Another benefit is the creation of "pharmaceutical products that are superior to their predecessors". (meditours.org.) Another would be able to extend the life span in humans. Those are some of the benefits genetic engineering but, there are several downsides to it as well. The downside of genetic engineering is the probably it would be costly. A single mistake has a devastating repercussion on society. That is borders on the issue of ethics and morality. Another would be ever increasing the demand for genetic engineering. There are many who would call it "playing god". That the individual person would be able to pick traits for their baby like what Vincent's parents did with Anton. Another one is if everyone was design to be perfected where is the change to overcome the impossible. To achieve something others
