Hero's Song by Edith Pattou

(Report by Natalie Kirby)

Hero's Song by Edith Pattou was about a group of heroes and their quest to defeat the evil queen. The book was published in 1998.This story was of a young hero and his companions. Throughout the book the characters travel to lands unknown to them on a dangerous quest. The story told of a group of friends and their journeys trough out

The main characters are Collin, Brie, Tallisn, and Silien. Collin, the hero, is a gentle gardener in a rural village. Tallisn is, a very good friend of Collins and a young bard, he travels with Collin for adventure. Brie is a warrior woman disguised as boy; she only travels with Collin so that she may find the men who killed her father so many years ago. Silien is an Ellyl, a being of magic; he travels with Collin so that he may learn more about humans and tries to make peace.

These noble and brave characters travel doggedly through tough times and emotional hardships. As they travel they encounter greater threats than they could ever have imaged. As they learn more about what they are facing, they learn horrible information about an evil queen and what she is doing to all of the countries. They learn about her terrible secrets that she has been keeping and what she is planning to do.

As Collin travels with his companions they kill many foul beings that the queen has sent out. When they finally kill the fire worm they find a stone, which the queen had used to make all of the monsters. This stone would enable them to undo all of her work. When they returned their own country they are praised for saving the kingdom. Collin is given a large house in which his father used to own. Tallisn becomes a true bard, and Silien achieves peace between the humans and the Ellyl. Brie stays with Collin for a bit but plans on leaving to find her father's murderers.

This was an excellent book. The writing is beautiful and well-done. Without being too descriptive, Pattou gives us pictures of the places, things and people that Collin and his friends encounter. The book is filled with adventure and breathtaking moments. This book really made me feel very grateful for my family and friends. The reason for this is because Collin and his friends are continually tested in their friendship. When they were wandering through a labyrinth they had to decide if they get out one there own or would they wait while one person rested. Also when Collin went to defeat the Fire Worm, Brie had to decide if she would listen to Collin and not help him kill it or would she run in to battle when he was getting hurt. All of these tense moments, of when they chose to help each other or respect the boundaries that were set, were very powerful. I hope that my friends, family, and I will work together like they did.
