Long Mystery

Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein were two young reporters trying to figure out a mystery that took a long to be solved in the movie All the President's Men. "The newsroom where the reporters worked during investigations was always bright, open, a place of truth" (Thomas, Evan, Andrew Nurr, and Eleanor Cliff par.1). The newsroom was exciting, the constant sound of typing, printing, ringing telephones, televisions, and news chatter were all different things that was going on. The two young hungry journalists from the Washington Post were trying to uncover a scandal involving a break-in at the Democratic National Headquarters. They quickly learn the break-in was not a simple burglary but a planned wiretapping scheme organized by the Committee to Re-elect the President which was President Nixon at the time. In the movie there was so much energy, tension and hunger in the people once they started to see that they were catching onto something super big and who might actually be involved in the robbery.

Bernstein and Woodward were pioneers of this genre of reporting, sticking their reputations, jobs, and lives on the line in order to reveal the truth. They also put their full trust in Mark Felt which was claimed to be Deepthroat. He was Woodward's source who supplied them with crucial information in developing the story about the break in. Deepthorat was a former FBI associate director. Deepthroat couldn't share everything he knew, he would only steer Woodward in the right direction and leave much work up to he and Bernstein. Deepthroat protected his identity while supplementing the investigation with information about President Nixon. Nixon and fellow members of the United States Government were a part of the biggest cover up in the United States history.

Through a series of questions and searching and help from the inside (Deepthroat), the reporters were able to crack the case. This brings up a bigger question. Dirty politics, is it all right to go to this extent to diminish your opponent. Are we not all supposed to be on the same side? We are all a part of the United States of America. This brings me to the current example in Mitt Romney; just recently he was caught in the news saying contradictory things that he says in most speeches. He said this because he was unaware he was being videotapes. Should dirty politics stop, or should more respectable politicians start running for office. If dirty politics stopped then we could have a cleaner and more legitimate democracy, one that still mirrors the interests and of its people but that generates less hatred.
