Character Analysis

Hazel Grace Lancaster

A. 16-year-old Hazel, or Hazel Grace, is the narrator of the novel living in Indiana. She was diagnosed with thyroid cancer at the age of thirteen and has a long-settled satellite colony in her lungs. She's on a special drug that will let her live longer than presumed. She's an only child and a stay at home student.

B. Hazel is Caucasian with a "Steroidally" round face due to her medication and rosy cheeks. She has a pageboy haircut and green eyes. She is very skinny due to her weight loss from the cancer and carries an oxygen tank with her.

C. Hazel has a very strong personality. She has an aura of sophistication. She's strong-minded and well informed. Easily annoyed, for example, she doesn't like cancer perks.

Augustus Waters

A. Augustus Waters is 17 years old and Hazel's new friend. He played basketball, and was good at it, until he got cancer. He had a touch of osteosarcoma, a bone cancer that usually occurs during rapid growth. He lost his right leg to the cancer. Augustus uses his Wish to take himself, hazel, and her mother on a trip to Amsterdam to meet their favorite author Peter Van Houten.

B. Augustus is tall and lean. He has straight short hair, the color of mahogany and green eyes. He also has a prosthetic leg.

C. Augustus is kind of like hazel. Like her, he also has a very strong personality. He is intelligent, sarcastic, and witty. He likes metaphors and often does them. For example, he keeps a pack of cigarettes and will put one in his mouth but won't light it. He says "...you put the killing thing right between your teeth, but you don't give it the power to do its killing."
