The author through out the story uses different beliefs from these religions like in Confucianism one of the many beliefs is that a person has essential goodness. Hsun-ching traveled to America just for wei-ching so that he could obtain the scrolls which expressed that he had essential goodness inside of him because he went out of his own way and risked everything for one person to have the Laughing Sutra scrolls. Through out the story hsun-ching cares for a litte boy who went deaf after falling over a waterfall. Hsun-ching treats this kid with respect and honor which is another big belief in Confucianism and everything went a little smoother.

Buddhism is centered around the four noble truths which believe life is suffering and the end to suffering is found in the eightfold path of righteous views, speech, conduct, effort, livelihood, mindfulness, meditation, and aspirations.
