Chapter 38

On the plantation, Uncle Tom feels that his faith is falling apart. Legree makes fun of him and makes him doubts God's existence. Then, after Tom sings a hymn, he sees Jesus Christ. He comes to speak to Tom. Tom once again believes and sings of happiness. When he is beaten by Legree he feels filled with the Lord's spirit. Cassy tells Tomin the middle of the night that she wants to kill Legree. Toms begs her not to since that is a sin before God. He tells her to try to escape instead. She agrees and says she will escape and try to do so without bloodshed.

Chapter 39

Cassy makes a plan to make Legree think that the garret of the house is haunted by ghosts. Then she and Emmeline try escape. They run from the house to a nearby swamp. Then, the overseers order a hunt and while the household searches for them, the women slip back into the house. They go into the garret where Cassy has been setting up food and supplies. They can stay there safely because will think that any noises they make there are the "ghost" and will be too scared to go upstairs and check it out.

Chapter 40

Since Legree isn't able to yell at Cassy and Emmeline he takes all his anger out on Tom. He thinks Tom knows something about the women's escape and sends for him for questioning. Legree tells Tom that he will kill him if he doesn't tell him where Cassy and Emmeline went. Tom is not shaken by this and says he would rather die than tell Legree. Legree pauses for a minute almost as though there is a fight between good and evil in his heart. Evil wins and he beats Tom all night and then orders Sambo and Quimbo to continue the beating. Tom prays and doesn't say a word. He changes the overseer's hearts and prays for them to be saved.

Chapter 41

George Shelby arrives at Legree's plantation two days later. He has spent a lot of time looking for his loved slave Tom after his father died. George finds Tom near death but Tom is happy to see Mas'r George after such a long time of being separated. He dies a contented man. George takes Toms body and tells Legree that he will have him tried for murder. Legree says that no whites witnessed him so the case wouldn't go to court. George punches him to the ground. The other slaves plead for him to buy him but he cannot. As he leaves he resolves he will abolish slavery.

Chapter 42

Cassy who is disguised as a Creole Spanish woman, escapes the plantation with Emmeline. They board the same boat as George and he notices Cassy. Because she is scared, she tells him absolutely everything. He promises to protect her as well as he can. A French women by the name of Madame de Thoux, is the passenger in the next cabin. She asks George questions about his home and soon realizes
