Whale Rider:

The Whale Rider is a film which has portrayed various themes of society. It intrigues a person to great extent and gives him a fruit of thought. The plot revolves around the life of a young girl whose life is full of adventures and new discoveries. These themes are portrayed in a very organized manner. Each theme makes the spectator analyze life and himself. It gives a chance to a person to do his self analysis. This particularly implies when one has to live in a society where ethnicity as well as racism have become one of the basic issues in a society. Therefore, the film is worthy to be watched by anyone who wants to learn about intricacies of life. It will also give chance to a learn ways of countering with those upheavals.

There are numerous reviews written on the film, with great analysis. The theme which is most emphasized is the family bond and conflicts that prevail within the generations. Furthermore, the mending of broken ties between the family members has also been depicted in a very unique manner. However, there is one factor that has not been emphasized upon. It includes the importance of leadership which changes the environment of the story. Due to gender discrimination, the upbringing of Pai is suffered. It also changes the way her grandfather thinks about his male and female children. It is this gender discrimination which enforces a person to change in accordance with the environment. For instance, Pai invokes a feeling of leadership, just to prove her grandfather that she can do as good as any male. She wants to earn respect as well as honor from her gruff grandfather who is extremely disappointed from her. Once again, her grandfather treats him this way because he has been brought up in a society where males are considered better than girls. It is in tradition of Maori tribe to have first male in their family as a new born child. However, by the grace of fate, Pai is born as a girl on first birth. For these many reasons, her grandfather has been groomed in a society where females are considered to lack leadership qualities. Hence, she cannot inherit leadership of the tribe which has always been proud for having a male first born. An environment where society looks down upon women's leadership is certainly a matter of great disruption. Due to this, Koro begins to gather up all the children who are male and firstborn to instruct them so that one of them can succeed him. However, Pai wants to fight up with this norm of society. Secretly, she gets into their training sessions and learns about leadership. At first she learns about leadership by simply spying on her grandfather. Later on, she earns the training from her uncle who is the second son of grandfather. With passage of time, everyone begins to realize that Pai is most worthy for attaining the post of leadership of her father's tribe.
