Definitions Paper

In the ever-changing business world today innovation, creativity, and design are essential for an organization to achieve success. Individual understanding of the similarity and differentiation of each definition is crucial. Only with understanding, can a company develop a process for invention and a culture that encourages ones creativity and desire to design.

According to University of Phoenix materials, innovation is defined as a "frame of mind" (Von Stamm, (2003) p. 7). In business, innovation can be the development of novel merchandise or inventions, process, or customer service, and discovering answers to problems. Innovation is challenging the norm to create an innovative culture. Innovation is composed of two main aspects, implementation, and creativity. Implementation is one's ideas becoming operative and achieved. In business, implementation is occurs when one has an idea, one develops the idea, and one sells the idea. Creativity, on the other hand is the act of developing an idea. One must usually be able to think outside of the box to create a new idea.

"Creativity is the process of bringing something new into being...creativity requires passion and commitment" (Naiman (2011) p. 1). Creativity origins may be from five sources; grace, accident, association cognitive, and personality. The first source is grace. Some believe creativity comes to one through a "divine inspiration" (Von Stamm, (2003) p. 7). One either is creative or not. The next source is accident; this view believes "creativity arises by serendipitous good fortune and a variety of scientific discoveries" " (Von Stamm, (2003) p. 7). This belief is hard for a business trying to develop creativity. The third source is association; this belief is that creativity comes from "lateral thinking and brainstorming" " (Von Stamm, (2003) p. 7). In business, companies can advance creativity by providing training. The fourth source is cognitive; this views creativity develops by "reasoning and understanding" " (Von Stamm, (2003) p. 7). One can be creative, if one is willing to work hard, be productive, and complete rigorous groundwork. However, in a company culture this would be a difficult source for employee creativity because one must have already have identified the problem. This perhaps should be seen as implementation. The final source is personality. This view believes creativity is "a particular human ability and intrinsic part of life and growth" (Von Stamm, (2003) p. 8). One can be creative if one removes his or her own barriers. One may in reality view this source as a skill. Creative individuals have the capability to develop new ideas, find solutions to problems, and to transfer knowledge across diverse contexts.

Besides innovation and creativity, one needs to comprehend design.
