International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) Effective Global Manager

Gǎn xiè (thank you) Chairman for the warm welcome and introduction. Nǐ hǎo (hello) It is a great honor to be in Beijing today. When the International Association of Business Communicators selection committee invited me to represent the United States, and deliver the keynote speech I must say I was a little nervous. Representing over 70 countries, speaking over 100 languages and boasting a professional network of almost 16,000 business members the IABC brings a wealth of experience and diversity. (IABC, 2008).

The world is changing before our eyes. At Google, we continually ask ourselves what will it take for an effective global business manager to make decisions for many nationalities? One of the best approach Google has found is flexibility. There is a need for flexibility to direct social concerns both in house and abroad; to transfer knowledge and to adjust to the changing requests of our customers.

Globalization of business, isthe perception to work effectively around the world has been critical to business success. According to Adler (2008), "cross-cultural management explains the behavior people and show them how to work in organizations with different cultures" (p.13). Google seeks a better understanding to better tailor its services to its billions of daily users.

"Effective global managers who have deep understanding of global business look for a reasonable advantage through intercultural training, thus gaining perceptive understanding of their global markets and supporting the enthusiasm that generates their staff. Each culture of people possesses its own personalities, which contributes to the strength of the organization. For example, in countries such as Britain and the United States which usually have a culture of little power between high levels managers and staff, organizations benefit from an environment of empowerment and acceptance of responsibility. In China and other countries where organization keeps a large distance, employees choose to follow a much stricter management of discipline." (Working Aboard, 2007).

In conclusion, there is no one way of conducting business; living in a universal setting offers many trials but there is no trials we cannot overcome with flexibility. To be flexible means to learn about the location you are doing business and who you are managing and working with both at home and abroad, for they are serious in our global environment. "Google is used by people in every country of the world" our mission is to organize the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful. (Google 2011).
