When evaluating a company's functions of management, there are a few factors that must be taken into consideration. For example, identifying what are the planning functions of management. Legal and ethics are just one of many types of influence's, a company may have on these planning functions and analyzing how these planning functions are applied is apart of the process. Boeing is one of the world's largest aerospace companies and leading manufacturer of commercial jet lines and defense, space, and security systems. Boeing is considered to be the top United States exporter that supports airlines and United States and allied government customers in more than ninety countries. Boeing products and tailored services include commercial and military aircraft, satellites, weapons, electronic and defense systems, launch systems, advanced information and communication systems and performance based logistics and training.

Because of the fact there are two separate parts to Boeing's organization, Commercial Airplanes and Defense, Space and Security; Boeing planning functions of management are considered to be a combination of strategic and operational. Strategically, Boeing leaders and high level executives have to develop long term plans regarding these aspects of the company because depending on how their organization is operated will determine the outcome of how effective their service will become to the customers with the manufacturing products continually being developed. For example, Boeing strategically operates the engineering lifecycle of their services under what's known as Special Item Numbers, also called (SINS). SINS are usually in phase formats, representing a major lifecycle portion of an engineering requirement. Services required under this SIN involve the definition and interpretation of high-level organizational engineering performance requirements such as projects, systems, missions, etc., and the objectives and approaches to their accomplishments. SINS tasks include, but not limited to an analysis of mission, program goals and objectives, requirements analysis, organizational performance assessment, special studies and analysis, training, privatization and outsourcing (Boeing: Integrated Defense Systems-Page 1 Section SIN 871-1). At the same time while the leaders of Boeing are creating innovative strategic methods for success, the company is continuously striving to maintain and/or improve the operational by developing processes and procedures for the employees to adhere and follow.
