One of the most controversial and costly issues dominating conversations in politics, the media, and society as a whole is the War on Drugs. Lately, it seems that the United States' drug policy has been in the headlines often. America's society is facing an ongoing drug problem. One of the primary focuses of the War on Drugs is marijuana. While it is currently listed as a Schedule I drug, marijuana is the most commonly used illegal drug in the United States. It has become increasingly controversial whether or not the drug should legalized. On one side there are supporters that believe legalization is the only solution for our nation. On the other, there are opposing views that believe legalizing the drug will only increase the number of drug users and drug related crimes. Since tobacco and alcohol, two life threatening substances are legal, it is relevant to questions why marijuana is illegal. The drug is illegal because of the amount of jobs and money invested into fighting this War on Drugs. Basically, the government has no choice but to continue prohibiting the drug. Marijuana should be legalized because not only does it have medical advantageous but could help solve social and economic issues facing our country today.
