Industry: Geocoding

Critical decisions in an organization are made based on location data. These decisions impact almost every aspect of the firm, ranging from portfolio management, risk assessment, targeting to market analysis. But even before, one can analyze these, one need to associate each location with a correct address much like geo tagging.

Geocoding is complex, and mistakes in geocode assignment can lead to poor business decisions that impact risk, relationships and profits.

Even though what3words sees itself as a global address group with opportunities both in global business applications and providing aid in developing countries, for it to be sustainable in the long run, it needs to focus more on its business application and uses.

Geocoding has wide application in varieties of industries. Some examples are mentioned below.

Strengths:

  1. Widespread application in business world
  2. With the growth of e-commerce and free delivery, logistics and reverse logistics are becoming a huge cost burden for companies. As a result, delivering it right at the first time at minimum cost is becoming the priority. As a result correct coding of addresses across the globe is set to become a major business opportunity. This industry is at its cusp of growth.
  3. With What3words leading the way this industry is slowly moving from complex latitude longitude based addressing to a more user friendly addressing.
  4. Low entry barrier of this provides ample opportunity for growth and competition which [pic 5]will make it a mature market and optimize the earnings of the industry as a whole.

Weakness:

  1. There is no minimum standard for geocoding. Maps can be produced and distributed based on a 25-percent hit rate. Readers may have no idea that a map represents only a small fraction of all cases. This is bad for the business and industry as a whole.
  2. What3words in particular currently does not have a vertical component for precise addressing of locations housing multiple units. It will prove to be a major constraint.

Opportunity:

  1. This industry can evolve into locations analytics through forward integration. Due to dynamic business events there is a huge business opportunity in integrating location with solutions. It eliminates risk of changing business conditions and help in cutting costs by increasing operational efficiency. This has resulted in an increasing demand for location analytics to analyze critical business situations on-demand as soon as they occur.

The location analytics market to grow from USD 7.2 Billion in 2015 to USD 14.2 Billion in 2020, at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 14.5% .

  1. Combine geocoding and spatial analysis: Point-in-Polygon Analysis (e.g. does a point falls in a sales territory or trading area?), Closest Site Analysis, Calculate drive distance and time (e.g. find the nearest repair shop in the case of a car break down)
  2. Refinements of address data models to incorporate complex addressing situations;
  3. Development of error propagation techniques to determine the level of geocoding quality required for a particular analysis scenario
  4. Comparative analysis of geocoding quality across different jurisdictions

Threats:

  1. No measures of reliability of geocoding results
  2. Limitations on personal privacy and anonymity
  3. Information overload
  4. Unauthorized access to georeferenced building information
