Topics: Concussions, violence, criminality, lack of sportsmanship, poor role models for youth, crass and unbridled commercialism—one should quit watching football on moral grounds

Speaker 1: I support Concussions, violence, criminality, lack of sportsmanship, poor role models for youth, crass and unbridled commercialism—one should quit watching football on moral grounds. In recent years, there are many negative news about football players. However, some crazy football fans still insist their idols are right. And even those football fans would fight with other football fans just because the latter’s idols win the game. Obviously, those football players who have bad manners are twisting our moral standards constantly. The root of the problem is that there are so many people watching their games. Those bad football players can get support from their fans. In other words, if we stop watching football, those bad guys will be punished easily; also, they do not have enough money to destroy our moral standards.

Speaker 2: Sure, preventing people stop watching football will prevent those players’ bad behavior and protect our moral standard. However, this is a negative solution. We have to face the problem bravely. Everything has two sides, if we quit everything which is related to some negative thing of moral standards, people will not make progress because there is no “false”. As Steven Johnson notes in his article Watching TV Makes You Smarter, “Just as important -- if not more important -- is the kind of thinking you have to do to make sense of a cultural experience.”

Speaker 1: You mean we have to learn and keep everything in our life, even though something will make bad effect on our life.

Speaker 2: You just understand a little of my thought. I mean everything reflected in our life is making sense of our cultural experience. We cannot quit them, but we can make more rules and laws to restrict those bad manners and bad behaviors. And secondly, if people stop watching football, many people whose jobs are related to the football will get a lower salary even lose jobs. Which might make the crime rates higher, resulting to damage the moral standards. And there are many football stars are black people; if they fall down, the social level of the blacks might be lower. Because their influence are reduced in the society.
