Johnathan Ross Transcript Analysis

My transcript is taken from "Friday Night with Jonathan Ross". It is a recorded interview with Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand. The register of the text is informal as it has a conversational tone. The audience is seemingly the older generation as explicit language is also used. The purpose of the show is to entertain the viewer. The content of my chosen episode of "Friday Night with Jonathan Ross". is an interview with Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand.

Throughout the text there are many Para linguistic features such as laughter "Russell laughs". These Para linguistic features cause the interview to possess a more conversational and friendly tone. This may make the interview seem more light hearted and informal and this may entertain the audience as they may also find the show easier to watch if the interviewee and interviewer are having a good time. It may also engage the audience as it makes them want to carry on watching.

The simile "like a sexy scarecrow" shows that the show is meant to entertain an older audience due to the fact that a younger audience may not fully understand what the term means.

Made up dynamic verb 'bonquering' used by Jonathan to form a rhyming couplet with the again dynamic verb 'conquering' again adult humour as the dynamic verb 'bonquering' refers to Russell Brand's former sex addiction. The fact that Jonathan Ross has been able to refer to this without causing any offence portrays that the two men have a friendship outside of the TV show resulting in a much more comfortable atmosphere amongst viewers.

The clause " they're only whooping because they know you'll sleep with anything" again shows their relationship outside of the show as Jonathan feels comfortable saying this to Russell causing the audience to be more entertained and engage with the banter.

The use of emphasis usually on verb phrases such as "LOOK" engages and entertains the audience as it places emphasis on certain terms. The use of the imperative "LOOK" causes the audience to feel like Jonathan is engaging with them personally which will result in them watching the show and finding it far more entertaining.

Banter between Jonathan and Russell in the clauses "Oh Christ what's that [Russell]"

"These are conventional feet Jonathan" eases the mood and causes the audience to be entertained as there is always a comedy factor to the banter. Para linguistic features such as (Jonathan laughs) reassure the audience that the banter is a natural occurrence for these men and that they are both comfortable with the insults that they are having thrown at them.
