Abstract

The purpose the experiment is to see if two magnets together have more magnetism than just one magnet by itself. Magnets are used in many ways in daily life, such as in dumps to separate all the metal scraps from the trash. My prediction was that if you double the amount of magnets, it will increase the magnetism more than twice that of a single magnet. For this experiment the supplies used were two identical horseshoe magnets, 100 paper clips, and two bowls or plates. 100 paper clips were placed in one of the bowls. One horseshoe magnet was dipped in the bowl with the paper clips in it. The paper clips attached to the magnet were placed in the other bowl. The paper clips that the magnet picked up were counted and data was recorded. This was done 5 times alternating between the two single magnets. All of the steps were repeated but with the two magnets together instead of one. The results for one magnet were 7, 9, 6, 5, and 13 paper clips making an average of 8 paper clips. The two magnets together had the results of 10, 16, 16, 15 and 10 paper clips making an average of 13.4 paper clips.
