Sounds Fishy

"Sounds fishy." " Like a fish out of water." "Fishing for a compliment." These expressions all imply a different definition of fish. In context, fish are cold blooded aquatic vertebrate that have fins and gills which comes from the Old Saxon word fisc; synonymous with dupe, angle, and bait, it is used in stories and everyday language.

Intensively fish are cold blooded aquatic vertebrate animals. Cold blooded is defined as having a body temperature that varies with that of the surroundings. Aquatic is an organism that lives in, on, or near the water. Vertebrate is an animal having a backbone or spinal column. Basically fish are animals that are able to adapt their body temperatures to the varying temperatures of the bodies of water that they live in. They have a Skelton made of bone.

Fish is synonymous with dupe, angle, and bait. When we say "she was fishing for her keys for an hour" we mean she was trying to find her lost keys. When we ask "what's your angle on this?" We are asking for your point of view about something. When we "bait" someone we are tempting them to do what we want.

We use many expressions about fish and fishing. For example, if something "sounds fishy," it may not be true. "Sometimes I feel like a fish out of water," when I go to a party and everyone but me is doing the latest dance. When I ask my friend if she likes my new dress, I would like her to say something nice. In other words, "I am fishing for a compliment." Sometimes a lawyer will ask a witness many questions in an effort to discover the facts of a court case. This is called "going on a fishing expedition." I grew up in a small town where everybody knew about my life. There were times when I thought I was "living in a fish bowl." Someone who likes to enjoy too many alcoholic drinks at parties "drinks like a fish."

Intensively defined fish are cold blooded aquatic vertebrate animals having fins and gills. Fish; synonymous with dupe, angle, and bait. We "bait" people into arguing with us. It is used in a variety of expressions which reveal its extended meaning.
