The Argument Against TV Essay

In 1999 people were glued to the television screen. Various anti-media groups sponsored Television

turn off week. Television turn off week was a challenge to the ninety eight percent of Americans who

own at least one television to turn it off and find something active and better to do. Television has

grown over the past sixty years from all the advances in technology and the rising industry of movies.

Corbett explains how people like to think that television was one of the best inventions of the twentieth

century and in reality it was.

In the beginning of the article the speaker, Corbett Trubery uses a snob appeal to express his feelings

on television addiction. "Whats even scarier about this waste of time is that it influences what we say,

think, feel and do." This strategy will appeal to adults because snob appeal will get his point across

about his disapproval on television and how life is so much more than watching other people have fun

on television rather than actually having fun and doing it on your own time! This strategy will appeal

to adults because once they realize television is not as good as the experiences out in the real world

and notice they don't want the boring influence of television in their lives they will think about their

childrens lives. Adults want their children to have a memorable life and letting them watch television

blocks them from experiencing realistic life outside of the television. Therefor the parents will

participate in television turn off week which will open their eyes to the new possibilities of closer

relationships with their children.

Corbett also uses imagery to draw the adult audience into his opinion. " What's most important is

that we all need to elevate about the blatant commercialism and mindlessness of television, and to sit

pretty on a plane where we can enjoy a richer and more fulfilling existence." This quote is explaining

how if you participate in television turn off week you could have more free time to live a life of luxury.
