The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton

This is a story about two groups of young adults from Tulsa, Oklahoma. In this rural community the people in the groups were either rich or poor.

The novel and the movie both had a similar plot. In both the movie and the book, Johnny stabs a soc. Then he runs away with Ponyboy to Windrixville. There was also a fire at a church where they saved some children in both the movie and the book. Finally, another similarity is when Johnny is dying and his mother wants to see him but Johnny turns her away and then he dies.

The movie and book are different in several ways. One of the differences is that in the movie, Ponyboy was not sick after he got back from Windrixville, but he was in the book. Another difference was the fight starting with Ponyboy getting punched in the face in the movie. In the book, Paul takes on Darry and the rumble starts. Finally, in the movie, they did not have the scene when Ponyboy meets his English teacher in the classroom.

I preferred the book for three reasons. One reason was the very last line of the book gave the story a very interesting and great ending. The movie seemed gloomier and sadder than the book. The book was very visual and descriptive so you really didn't need to see the movie to understand it. These are just some of the reasons why I preferred the book.

Overall, this was a great book and I was surprised to learn it was written by a teenage girl. I would recommend this book to anyone.
