True Friendship

In a true friendship, one needs to be a friend to have a friend. Whether it is a new friendship or a life- long friendship, the principals of what makes a "friendship" are the same. A friend will be there for someone to make their days better and knows that there will be both good and bad times. Like any relationship, a friendship is a give and take; both parties have to put forth the effort in order for that person to be considered a "friend". A friendship is one built on trust, support, and loyalty.

One of the many definitions of friendship is a person whom one knows, likes and trusts. Trust is a necessity in a friendship; it is the foundation in which a friendship builds upon. A friend gains trust in a friendship by being able to maintain confidentially. A friend's life dreams to their worst fears could be shared. Whichever the case, they are private thoughts and should be kept safe within the friendship. A friendship that has trust is a valuable friendship.

A friendship should always maintain a positive support system within it. A friendship is at one time or another going to require the support of that friend. The support can be offered in many forms; a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, offering advice, or being an ally along side the friend. No matter the situation, the support should always be of the friend's best interests. The support should never be hurtful. However the support is given, it should always benefit the friend whether it be in celebration or sorrow.

A friend who has gained trust and offers support has the characteristics of being a loyal friend. Loyalty in a friendship is the glue that holds the friendship together. A loyal friend is a faithful friend. A friend that will always be there for one another no matter what the circumstances are demonstrates loyalty. Loyalty in a friendship is what molds new friendships into life-long friendships. Moreover, it turns friends into family members. Without loyalty, one does not have a "friendship"; one merely has an acquaintance.

One needs to be a friend to have a friend. A friendship is not a one-sided deal. Like any relationship it takes effort from both parties in order for a friendship to flourish and grow. A friendship can be a beautiful thing if all of the qualities apply. Whether the friend lives locally or long distance, a friendship can remain strong as long as the basic principals remain in the friendship. A friend never says good-bye, rather they say see you later.
