I decided to do the sculpture essay on the Immortal Ten Statue because it is one of the most significant statues on campus. It was built more than 80 years ago by a man named Bruce Greene. He decided to horror the ten students that had died in a bus/ train accident while on their way to a basketball game. I feel that the statue has an obvious meaning. It was built to convey the sense of remorse and sadness that everyone felt when the accident occurred. The statue was placed on the Baylor campus between Pat Neff and the Bill Daniel Student Center, otherwise known as the SUB. It is located in a central spot where everyone will be able to see it as they walk by

All of the players that are depicted in the statue seem to be watching over the Baylor campus. The statue faces away from Pat Neff, therefore making the players look over Fountain Mall. I feel the designer did this so that everyone who passes by can look and remember the lost, but not forgotten basketball players.

The subject of the Immortal Ten statue is of course, the ten players that died while on the way to the basketball game. There are four life size statues that stand out from all of the rest. I'm not sure if they were considered more important people, but none the less, they are the only ones that are free standing. The other six players are in a base-relief panel behind the four standing players.

The material that the statue is made out of is bronze, however, the figures are not solid, they are hollow. If you were to look closely at the statue, you can actually see that some of the bronze is starting to peel away.

When I look at the statue I feel a sense of sadness, yet honor because the statue was created for the ten players that died in a horrific bus accident while on the way to a game. They had no idea that they would be put into a situation that they would not come out alive in. However, a hero came out of this tragedy. One of the players had seen the oncoming train and decided to push his best friend out the window, saving his best friends life, but taking his own.
