War time bring out both the good and bad in people. Discuss.

War time brings out both the good and bad in people without doubt. War is simply a test of human nature in its extremity; which inevitably causes us to behave and react to extremities in intense ways, whether these are good or bad. War time brings out the true colours in all of us. It has most definitely brought us many heroes, although many criminals and cowards as well.

I would first like to start by discussing the positives that war brings out in people. War time proves the mass amount of courage, helpfulness, camaraderie and bravery in certain civilians who put their lives on the line in order to help others. There are many great stories and legends telling of acts of kindness and bravery during war time. Oskar Schindler is a prime example of how helpfulness and bravery was demonstrated during war time. Oskar was a German industrialist; famous for saving over one thousand Jews during the holocaust. He employed them to work in his factories; therefore saving them from being transferred to death camps. This demonstrates great bravery, as Oskar put his life on the line to employ and save these Jews; facing persecution if he were to be caught. Other traits of heroic, brave behaviour are evident throughout 'The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas' novel. Mother was a key example of this. Although under the strict influence of a Nazi government (of which her husband was commandant of), she was still able to find the courage to speak out against it, and voice her personal beliefs. She was able to stand up for what she thought was right, proving that she is a good person. Mother's courageous act of speaking out, as well as the way she treated the Jews as well as she could (despite her obligations) proves the positive effect war can have on the character of one.
