Population Case

There was population growth in many cities throughout the United States. New York, Chicago, and Philadelphia had the most population growth from 1870 to 1900. New York went from 1,478,103 in 1870 to 3,437,202 in 1900. Chicago in 1870 had a population of 298,977 which then increased to 1,698,575 in 1900. Philadelphia had a large increase in population as well, it went from 674,022 in 1870 to 1,293,697 in 1900.

Many americans, espically farmers, migrated toward the cities in the lates 1800's. The main cause of this was the increases in industrys such as factories. The rapid population of immigrants flooded the city streets. Many farmers left their farms and headed for the cities to seek a better living.

African Americans also moved to the cities in search for a better living. Most african americans lived in the rural south. Along with hard times came perdujice times. This caused violence which led african americans to leave the south and head for the northern cities. During the 1890's the south of Chicago had a strong african american community.

Poor famalies also moved to cities. There they were crammed in to the city center which was the oldest part of the city. There they struggled to survive with diseases being easily spreadable. With space in the cities limited builders found a new kind of house. Usually these buildings were 6 or 7 feet tall and could hold more people. Unfortunetly these buildings had no windows, heat, or inside bathrooms and 10 people were put in each room.
