Jack and Ralph have some similarities and differences. They can work as a foil and only one of them can be the best leader out of them both. There are many symbols that shows how each of them are alike and different. They are the ones that play the most important role in the book.

Ralph has a character of being a leader in this novel. Ralph is much focused when he has to do something he does not get off topic. That is the reason why he is the one chosen to be the leader during their lost on the island. He has the character of solving things out. He isn't the kind of person that quits anything he wants to accomplish his mission and get it over with. He thinks of good ways of surviving on the island with the other boys. Ralph expresses in the story that he is not a quitter and he will do anything to get his way out of the island. Ralph believes that everyone is equal and should be treated the same. No matter what happens between the boys and him he is still helpful.

Jack on the other hand the most important thing to him on this island is going out and hunting. Jack does not care about being rescued all he wants to do is find something to eat. "'If a ship comes near the island they may not notice us. So we must make smoke on top of the mountain. We must make a fire.'" Jack shows another side of him when he took the boys who were supposed to watch the fire and takes them out to hunt and leaves the fire. When the boys had an opportunity of leaving the island because of Jack taking the boys they couldn't leave the island. Jack is only on the island to hunt for food and doesn't care about leaving. He also gets attention from the other boys and they get caught up to hunt instead of being rescued. That leaves Ralph by himself where he is focused to find a way to leave the island.

This shows that Ralph is a better leader then Jack. Ralph would do anything to find a way to be rescued or get him and the boys off this island. Jack is only there to hunt for food and stay full. He cares less about being rescued. The best person to be a leader is Ralph.
