INTRODUCTION

In this essay I will be looking at the methods and techniques that are used to personalise a screed, to suit working with different clients. I will also give an outline of my understanding of Hypnosis and in my conclusion I will consider whether a personal induction will always be more effective.

WHAT IS A PERSONALISED INDUCTION?

A personalised induction is a hypnotic induction that is tailored to suit a specific individual. Although as humans we all appear to be quite similar, we are different in many ways. We come from different cultural backgrounds and have different likes and dislikes, outlooks, values and perspectives. When working with the subconscious mind in Hypnosis, we need to try and achieve the best chance of success, and to do our upmost to help put clients achieve their goals.

I think that a screed for an induction should try to include as many likes and where possible, no dislikes. Likes can relax a person and make them feel at ease, dislikes can distract and distress someone and make them feel uneasy. As was explored in my previous essay relaxation is vital for an infective induction.

Communication between people is not just using language. Our body language, tone and volume are generally more important when communicating than the words we use. It is estimated that about 7% of communication is through words we use and 55% is through body language, with rate and tone of voice being 38%. As a client will most likely have their eyes shut throughout an induction the hypnotherapist will lose over half of their opportunity to communicate. This is why the emphasis should be placed on choosing the wording that you would use in a screed carefully to maximise the use of the 7% most effectively.

As we are in a position where words will have to suffice, we have to work closely with the client on their likes and dislikes, as well as their personality, in order to gain their trust and help them to reach a state of hypnosis for the work we would be doing together. To enable us to do this we need to have more of an understanding of how our brain work and how we can work with our brains.

Our brains are constantly receiving information, this then enables us to remove ourselves from the present moment and indulge ourselves in something else. When we are daydreaming or reading a book that interests us we may find that we are reliving the experience. This is a very useful human trait that enables us to enhance our use of hypnotherapy. Our brains create our mental state, so if we think of something that causes us to become distressed, anxious or fearful we can have a physical reaction. This can work both ways, if we think of something that makes us happy and or relaxed we can become happy and relaxed. If a suggestion was planted into our subconscious mind during hypnosis, this suggestion may have a physical reaction. Some personalities are more inclined to react to certain experiences. Our brain makes sense of information and can store information for later use. Experiences can be received by the brain from our senses; parts of our brain have been designated to our senses. We have a Visual Cortex, an Auditory Cortex, and an Olfactory Cortex and so on... Bandler and Grindler revoluntioned psychology by using the terms and definitions of Modalities. (The word modalities refers to a certain type of information/and/or the representation format in which information is stored) as the first language of our minds.

MODALITIES

As the brain receives information from our senses it represents it internally in a way that allows us to gain access to it. The senses that I am referring to are; - Sight, Hearing, Feeling, Smell and Taste, although the last two are often considered secondary senses to the feeling category. An individual will find one of these senses easier to imagine and therefore by talking to a client and establishing their modality it becomes possible to talk to them in a way that they will find more comfortable. Each of the modalities has representations in the client's behaviour and language, physiology and may also be present in leisure and work.

The psychologist Paul Baken suggested that different types of thinking would elicit different eye movements. Lateral Eye Movement or LEM is not fool proof, as some left handed and a small amount of right handed people will show the opposite patterns, but in a general rule the eye field on the right side of the brain is linked to the left field of vision and controls the eye movements to the left. The opposite is also true of the right LEM's.

The Modalities are:-

KINAESTHETIC.

This modality represents our feeling system, internally and externally. It may also include how we feel about something. People of this modality are very touchy. An example of a speech pattern from a kinaesthetic person would be; - I know how you feel, or not a clever move. Some of the better words to use when talking to a client or personalising a screed to suit a client of this modality are Touch, Smooth, Gentle, Move, Cool, Solid, and Hold.

The LEM for people of this modality would be down and to the right, people may have a soft lower or deeper tone to their voice, they may generally be round shouldered and have relaxed muscles.

VISUAL

People of this modality can visualise, and daydream. They have a great imagination. The words that might be used when talking or personalising a screed might be: - I see what you mean or Looks good to me. Imagine, Watch, Bright, and Colour References, In Site and or Perspective. The LEM for someone who is primarily visual is likely to be defocused, or going up to the left or right. The eyes will go to the person's right when they are forming images and to the left when remembering them. Visual people generally speak faster and in a high tone, they tend to hold their body in a more relaxed way to kinaesthetic people.

AUDITORY.

People with this modality as their primary are generally more inclined to enjoy listening to sounds that include music and speech as well as imagining sounds. If sounds are not to their liking they may find them sensitive and obtrusive.

Common words and phrases for people of the auditory modality as their primary would be, Say, Remark, Resonate, Harmony and Discuss. Phrases to use when talking or using a screed would be "I see what you mean" or "Looks good to me".

The LEM for auditory people is generally horizontal and midline, their eyes would move to the right when they are constructing sounds and to the left when they are remembering
