There are about five hundred twenty eight million people in North America. Out of those, about 4.4 million of them have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD. This is a very serious disorder and is looked over by numerous amounts of people and in many cases it can even be incorrectly diagnosed. ADHD is a controllable disorder, not a curable one. A person can however grow out of ADHD. This disorder is by far one of the more serious because it affects about six percent of the population. the six percent that it affects are usually students, and that is where the problem begins.

ADHD has many symptoms that can arise and because of this, it is extremely difficult to diagnose a child with ADHD. There is no "one test" that can truly diagnose someone with such a serious disorder, instead a child must go through multiple tests. The symptoms are not to diverse and really focus around attention and hyper-activity. They include: having trouble paying attention, daydreaming, difficulty listening, easily distracted from schoolwork, unable to stay still, talkative, acting or speaking without thinking, not being able to focus, and many others like these. The person is easily distracted or forgets details of daily routines. The second type is Predominatly Hyperactive-Impulsive type. Again, by psychological definition this means The person fidgets and talks a lot. It is hard to sit still for long (e.g., for a meal or while doing homework). Smaller children may run, jump or climb constantly. The individual feels restless and has trouble with impulsivity. Someone who is impulsive may interrupt others a lot, grab things from people, or speak at inappropriate times. It is hard for the person to wait their turn or listen to directions. A person with impulsiveness may have more accidents and injuries than others. There is also a third type, but it is only a mixture of the two types mentioned. Children, peticularly boys are over looked when it comes to diagnosing ADHD because boys are naturally destructive, active, hyper, and fidgety. Having these attributes at an early age is normal, but children with ADHD will hold on to these characteristcs through their teens and possibly into adulthood. Teachers might label the child as "spirited" and this is usually a sign that you should get your child tested for the disorder.

When children are diagnosed with ADHD their parents might ask why or how they contracted the disorder. The truth is that contracting the disorder is mainly due to genetics, but certain studies suggest that premature delivery and a low birth weight can cause
