Autism is a developmental disorder of the brain that presents itself within the first three years of life. This disorder is a physical condition connected to the brain's chemistry and abnormal biological factors. It theorized stress, genetic mutations, and other risk factors can increase the odds of a child developing the disorder. One out of every 110 children will become diagnosed with this mental impairment.

Autism was initially a rare disorder that sprang up in the 1940s. By 1990 autism's diagnosis increased rapidly. Americans tracked autism in children from 1993 to 2003. This 10- year observation revealed autisms rate grew an astonishing rate of 800% in school aged children. In 2006 the Center for Disease Control continued to track this disease. The individual may suddenly become withdrawn, develop aggressive behaviors, and regress, and lose the language skills he or she acquired previously.

This malfunction can produce other sicknesses such as allergies, gastrointestinal issues, seizures, and sleep disruptions. Autism can affect the individuals muscle tone causing clumsiness and other problems associated with this disease. At different ages and stages autism may display itself in different ways. Some infants can be unresponsive to people or focus on objects for extended periods . Children may lack social skills, have poor eye contact with others or not smile when others interact with them. Teenagers and adults who suffer from this disease may have poor social skills and have the inability to make friends or fit in with peers. Because of this powerlessness the individual cannot sustain conversations with others. Along with the ability to communicate with others some of these individuals have a severe dislike of touching and do not handle different textures well. These problems cause the person to become isolated and worsen interactions with others.

Researchers work diligently to find a cause and cure for autism but their efforts are fruitless. Autism is the number one developmental disability. Autism is on the rise. It is the fastest growing developmental disability and the numbers do not seem to be declining. Researchers are perplexed about why this disease continues to rise and making are making attempts to diagnosis better properly the disease. One out of every one hundred children is diagnosed with autism. Boys are at a greater risk, they are four times more likely to develop the disease than girls. Presently there are up to 1.5 million American living with the disease.
