Cognitive Team Paper

For centuries now, it has been expected for individuals to have assigned daily tasks that keep them busy and productive. In most cases, the tasks are completed in order for the individual to receive some sort of compensation or reward that will benefit him or her and their loved ones. Today, the need for jobs and careers has become much higher and severe especially considering the high demand for life necessities. Therefore, the competition for jobs and careers also has created a significant level of tension and stress for citizens in everyday life. DeLapa (2009) states, "If you're not one of the 10.1 percent of San Diegans who are unemployed, you're one of the 89.9 percent who may be feeling anything from panic to survivor's guilt" (p. 39). Whether it is the case of unemployment, anxiety for a close job opportunity, or the guilt that arises from those who are employed, the entire matter has managed to create dangerous level of mental stress within the world. The mental stress has even pushed certain individuals to a level of much needed counseling and therapy. Even though it occurs in the different situations, those in need of counseling and therapy are mainly those who are unemployed. In response to clients needing counseling for this particular matter, one of the most convenient treatments has been centered on the Cognitive Theory which allows the client to use mental growth and strength exercises to cope and properly handle their situation.

Sources of Mental Stress Caused by Jobs or Unemployment

Sources of stress related to working a job comes in many forms. For example, working creates time restraints and anxiety caused by energy and sleep deprivation. Those who work must maintain organization in his or her life to avoid undue stress related to time restraints and ensuring organization will avoid missed activities during working hours. However, the stress associated with working is a necessary stress because one must work to pay bills for survival. How one handles the stress with make him or her successful in working through the stress versus trying to work with the stress as a normal part of his or her life.

Mental stress, which is caused by unemployment, comes from the lack of self worth and financial instability. When one is unemployed the determination in finding a job can create additional stress that can be exaggerated in slow economic times when jobs are short and unemployment is high. One can lose his or her sense of self when he or she cannot find employment because basic life survival requires money and when one cannot work than money is not made. One loses self confidence when he or she cannot achieve employment, or when he or she is underemployed and cannot work a job worthy of his or her acquired talents.

The mental stress that jobs or unemployment can bring

When a person loses their job it is normal to have many feelings. A person may feel hurt, angry, or even vulnerable because of it. Although there are many stresses when losing a job there are also ways to deal with the issues. A person can get through the tough time by taking care of themselves and reach out to others for support (Smith, 2010).Losing a job can be very stressful but a person can always take advantage of the situation by rethinking goals and rediscover what career path may make a person happy. Although some people lose their jobs because of lack of ability to do the work but our society has made it hard for companies to survive and are causing May layoffs.

A person job is much more than making money. It is also an influence on how we see our self and how also how others perceive us. A job also gives a person structure, purpose and meaning (Smith, 2010). Although a person may experience many feeling when losing a job there are also many stresses a person may experience.

Two of those stresses are low self-esteem, and the financial stress. Low self-esteem can happen when a person feels they are a great attribute to the company then they are laid off because of lack of money. Although it is not the person fault they are being laid off they may feel that they're not good enough to work anywhere else either. Self-esteem can be effect to a point where is can cause depression and other stresses. When a person loses there job they have to look at the bigger picture and understand that it was not their fault and that they can find a job somewhere else.

The financial stress that a job loss can cause is endless. When a person has to provide for their family it can cause a person to feel that they are not able to do their job at home. Not only do people suffer from job losses finical it can also damage a marriage. The damaged marriage can stem from lack of financial stability within the family can cause one person to resent the other. Another problem with final stress is the fact that a person cannot provide for their family but also may lose their valuables such as house, or car. This can cause a person to become depressed and not even try to look for another job.

Process of Accepting Stress Created By Jobs or Unemployment

One must realize becoming mentally stress brought on by either work-related stress, or the stress associated by unemployment cannot be resolved without acknowledging the problem exists. By acknowledging there is a problem and seeking help through counseling and therapy can help one from become stressed to the point of becoming unable to function in normal life.
