Reaction Paper for "Delineation of Two Annonaceae Species using CPDNA Markers (MATK and TRNL-F) with a Potential Anti-Oxidant Property"

The researchers provided a significant contribution for the proper assessment of the Philippine's biodiversity. Their study gave clarity to the relationship of Uvaria sibuyanensis with the genus Goniothalamus and Uvaria. Their study resolved the the true identity of U. sibuyanensis which is found to be more closely related to the genus Adinandra of the family Theaceae. The researchers thereafter proposed a new combination called Adinandra sibuyanensis. Their new discovery will help other scientists and researchers in the correct identification and classification of this species. Furthermore, the researchers conducted experiments to determine the phytochemical-content of Goniothalamus gitingensis which may possibly contain anti-oxidant properties. After performing the experiment they found out that there is no significant difference between the G. gitingensis leaf extract and ascorcic acid. Therefore, G. gitingensis can possibly be use as an alternative for ascorbic acid as an anti-oxidizing agent. Further experiments with regards to the feasibility and utilization of other plants found in our country should be done in order to make the most out of our natural resources.

Reaction Paper for "A Novel Species of Bikkia (Rubiaceae) based on nrDNA and cpDNA Markers, with Implication on its Biological Activities"

The researchers were able to discover a new species of Bikkia which grows in an inland forest opposite to those commonly found on coastal areas. They resolved the phylogenetic relationship of Bikkia sp. found in Mt. Redondo with the presently recognized group of Bikkia and Thiollirea. They also discovered that the inland forest Bikkia differs in structure from the coastal Bikkia. The inland forest Bikkia which was named by the scientist as Bikkia redondonensis has a different reproductive structure. B. Redondonensis exhibit a longer calyx, narrower fruit and a much exerted pistil and stamen. I believe that the difference in morphological structures cited earlier is a clear sign of natural selection for the plant to survive in a different habitat. I also think that the researchers should also explore some other areas in the Philippines where they can possibly find some other inland forest Bikkia species. Going back to the study conducted, the researchers also assessed the phytochemicals which can be found in Philippine Bikkia species for the first time. The phytochemical found in the Philippine Bikkia species are: phenol, higher, alcohols, terpines, glucosides, anthraquinone, carbohydrates and steroids. Therefore, they found out that Bikkia contains antimicrobial, antioxidant and more other properties. It is up to us to device a way in order to make this discovery useful. The utilization of phytochemicals
