Sharkwater reveals the corruption and sleaze surrounding the world's shark populations in the marine reserves of Costa Rica, Cocos Island, and the Galapagos Islands. Most of the countries around the world impose numerous rules on the hunting of wildlife. There are many problems when sharks are hunted illegally for various purposes such as their fins. Sharks are a wonderfully intelligent creature and the greed people are putting in towards earning a benefit is really disappointing. Shark Fining is an issue that affects animals, humans, the environment and the government. Since there are humans out there viciously hunting for all types of sharks, it can cause a very rapid extinction of sharks in the water. The rise in usage of shark fins and the popularity of the shark fin soup causes more sharks to be finned with greed for profits. This also uproots the problem for governments to put control over markets in trade for shark fins as illegal trade continues as proved in the documentary.

The effects of extinction of shark species can be seen on the marine ecosystem and how it is affected when the top predators are removed; the oceanic ecosystem degrades due to the imbalances in the sea. There are so many mass killings taking place in the sea of sharks because of many misconceptions and historical stereotypes people have of sharks. As I watched this documentary, I learned a lot about sharks and what they really are. Since there is a vast amount of sharks being slaughtered over the past decade, many scientists have started to conclude that sharks are going to be extinct within the next 5 to 10 years. The greed that people are putting in towards killing sharks is for earning a profit from shark fins. Humans are lead in different directions and because of that there minds are targeted towards the money coming by killing innocent sharks. This puts problem not only in the environment as this can have a destabilizing effect on the marine ecosystem as a whole, and potentially threatens yields of other commercially important species but as well as economies of countries who mass trade shark fins illegally and bring money into the country illegally, which in turn effects the overall economy.

While the people killing sharks, also known as poachers seek for financial advantage and sometimes for religious significance, they fail to realize the negative impact their actions have on the environment, the survival of the shark, the economies of the world, and most of all the wrong doing they take part in. There are many different ways for solutions to end shark killings and most of all shark finning. The communities need to be aware of this issue and the problems it causes as shark fin is not anything that help people live longer nor does it treat any diseases. Many people perceive media depictions of sharks as bloodthirsty creatures which are totally wrong and needs to be changed.
