UGLIES by Scott Westerfeld

(SUMMARY)

Tally Youngblood's friends have all turned 16, so they've gotten the surgery to turn pretty. Tally crashed a party in new pretty town to try to find her pretty friend, Peris. She felt dumb after seeing him so pretty and she felt like a dumb ugly for crashing the party. On the way back from new pretty town, she met a girl named Shay. Shay is still an "ugly" just like Tally so the two of them hang out and do stuff together. Shay taught Tally how to ride a hoverboard. After Tally learned how to ride one, they sneaked out of town together on some nights. While hoverboarding, Tally started to notice that shay doesn't like to talk about the pretty surgery so Tally just ignored about it. Tally then discovered that she Shay have the same birthday, so they plan on turning pretty together

One day, Shay told Tally that she's going to run away to a place called the Smoke because she doesn't want to be pretty. Shay was afraid that if she herself became a "pretty", her inner self might change just like the other pretties. Tally decided not to follow Shay because she wants to turn pretty. But still, Shay accepted Tally's decision but she still gave Tally a note in code that tells directions on how to get to the Smoke.

Tally's 16th birthday finally came. She's finally going to undergo the surgery and finally became pretty. While waiting, someone took her away to a place called "Special Circumstances". In Special Circumstances, the people are all pretty but in cruel, cold ways. Tally gets dragged to Doctor Cable's office then the doctor asked her about Shay. The Doctor said that she will not be allowed to turn pretty unless she follows after Shay and lets the Specials track her to the Smoke - a group of runaway Uglies. Tally was forced to go and find the place called Smoke. She then prepared for the long journey.

Before Tally leave, Dr. Cable gave her a heart necklace that will track Tally once she opens it and uses the eye-scan function.

Tally goes through a life-threating journey but she finally arrived at the "Smoke". There, she met a guy named David. Meeting David's parents, she learns that a part of the pretty operation creates brain lesions, which force all pretties to be happy and compliant. Between this, and her feelings for David, she decides to destroy the tracking beacon.

Unfortunately, Tally accidentally activates the tracker when she tries to destroy it, and the Smoke is invaded by Special Circumstances who take all the uglies back to their home cities. Tally only just escapes, and with David, who was outside the Smoke when the attack began, she makes her way back to the city to free her friends and David's parents. In a daring raid on Special Circumstances
