Introduction:

Company's practice: Responsible Care®

Bayer has voluntarily committed itself in line with the rules of the Responsible Care® initiative to continuously improve its performance, which under principle 8 in Global Compact. If this practice is adopted into Bayer's business, environment and performance of Bayer's technologies, processes and products will be improved so as to avoid harm to the environment. It also minimise the waste and resources can be efficiently used. Besides that, maximum safety can be observed when managing materials and end products that may bring an impact on the environment. Help and advice are also provided to the users. At last, all Bayer's employees are responsible on ensuring the company's environmental protection objectives are achieved.

Lesson learnt

Eastman, an international chemical company has adopted Responsible Care®. Responsible Care® has become the way that Eastman operates their business. Eastman commits to promote the Responsible Care principles, ethics and practices along their own value chain. Eastman also extends existing local, national and global dialogue processes to allow the business to deal with the concern and expectations of key stakeholders, giving support in continuing development of Responsible Care.

Sustainable Effort towards CSR Makes Sense

Bayer's project, "Making Science Make Sense" which promotes environmental issues through education has gain public praise and been honored with "Corporate Social Responsibility Award 2010" (Bayer n.d.). This proves that sustainable effort toward CSR makes sense.

1.Establish renewable energy research center by forming chairs and fellowship in premier universities, such as University of Saskatchewan, which is famous for winning the top prize at APMA-AUTO21 Annual Conference* with Second Generation Bio-fuels from Waste Biomass. Research and investigation carried out by universities help network members to improve their production process to be eco-friendly as well as their products. The benefits are students continue to practice eco-friendly approach in their jobs, sustainable research on eco-friendly technology and reduce cost of production. The risks are high cost and consumer might need to bear the cost.

2. Eco-friendly Technology Innovation Award is an incentive to encourage involvement of public in environmental issues. After viewing participants' proposal, local network members provide research fund to potential innovations. This will be carried out annually and the result will be announced during World Environmental Day on 5th June. A huge prize is given as reward. The benefits are motivate public to involve in environmental issue and shareholders and employers can get satisfaction through good image of the company in CSR. The risk is Consider as failure investment when participants fail to innovate something useful or they do not use the money properly for research
