The goal of a college education ultimately is to gain the skills and knowledge needed to become apart of the working world. An important component of a college education is retaining the knowledge learned and applying it to the working world through employment. The action of finding a job based on the education that a students receives is seen as an advantage to most people but as William Deresiewicz outlines in his article the "Disadvantages of an Elite Education," a college education can be viewed in terms of disadvantages as well. Deresiewicz a former professor at Yale who also attended Columbia University, an Ivy league college, published his article in the American Scholars summer 2008 issue. As following summary of Deresiewicz article includes this critics analysis and response to his article indicate, there are different view points when considering what is learned from an Ivy league college institution verses a public college institution; Deresiewicz uses his own experiences along with the experiences of his friends to point out the disadvantages that a student attending an elite education could encounter.

Summary

Prestigious, affluent, expensive, high academic values, and privately owned are all words that can accurately be used to describe an elite education. The issue with an elite education is that students who attend an elite college miss out on opportunities that a person attending a public college institution would normally experience. The reason for this being that students who attend an elite college focus on different values and as a result some opportunities are experienced while others are not.
