I. Point of View:

Consultant

II. Statement of the Problem:

The dilemma of Al Burns whether to compromise his personal values and standards to adapt to company's standards and ethics as being part of the real world.

III. Objective/s:

To conform to company standards and ethics without compromising the personal values of Al Burns.

To make quality work for profits to the company without jeopardizing the safety and welfare of the customers and other users and without shortchanging them of what they paid for.

IV. Areas of consideration:

1. Al Burns is an engineering student from a reputable university and considered as a laborer without any authority and was hired as summer help of C.B. Construction. He attempts to apply his engineering know-how to the jobs at hand to make them first rate work. He is confused as to go along the business practice of Kevin Fields which involves cutting corners.

2. Kevin Fields is the sole owner and operator of C. B. Construction. He never went to college and just borrowed money to finance his business and build it from there by underbidding all the other contractors for construction projects. He is covertly envious of Burns educational attainment, thus, does not appreciate the efforts of Burns to apply what he knows as an engineering graduate.

3. Jack Walton, a high school graduate, is a year round employee and the assistant to the general foreman. He resents Burns' ambitious behavior.

4. Tom Anderson has been promoted to the position of general foreman. He is objects to the attitude of Fields and Walton towards Burns and the low quality work of the company. He resigned twice already but re-applied due to lack of other job prospects and he needs the money.

V. Alternative Courses of Action:

1. Burns must resign from the C.B. Construction because the company is corrupt in its practices and since he is bothered with the inconsistencies in the supervision of the projects and the substandard materials used in the projects. As an employee, he also feels responsible for the project. Since these practices are against his beliefs and values, it would be preferable to resign than to compromise his values at the expense of the paying customers. Poor quality works of the company puts at risk the lives and welfare of the users.

2. Burns, together with Mr. Anderson, may conduct a forum with Mr. Fields and Mr. Walton with regards to the long-term benefits of high quality work projects. More and more companies will opt to have C. B. Construction as their contractor if they are reputed to produce high-quality works.
