  • “INAKUP, AREKUP”

In a catholic dominant country like the Philippines, the topic “Family Planning” and “Contraception” are big and sensitive issues. The church encourages the public to engage the natural method which is unsure. The TV advertisement of the Department of Health “Inakup, Arekup” tackles about the life of a young girl whose parents don’t engage family planning. Her childhood was deprived from her because at the age of 8 she had to take charge of selling banana cues in the street instead of playing like other normal kids do. At the age of 12, she has to stop studying even though she wants to continue.

It narrates many negative possibilities and impacts once you started an unplanned family. The children suffer the most because of this irresponsible engagement in life. The TV advertisement is an eye opener to the public but still, it doesn’t encourage the public to take a particular form of contraception. It is up to their own choices if they want to contribute to the escalating population of our beloved country.

This advertisement used a creative way to advocate values, to engage social change and nation building. Sexual debut is getting younger and younger and the government needed to find a way to alarm the millennial on how hard life is. Seminars don’t work anymore. Maybe they can bring up some seminars but these seminars cannot force everyone to listen and to open their mind about the issue. We need a stronger material and I think that is when the government came up with “Inakup Arekup”. A real life situational advertisement that will give us an overview of what most of the Filipino families really is. It shows us what is beyond our knowledge on having a family without offending the church.

  • International league against racism and anti-Semitism’s “Babies”

This advertisement showcases new born white babies with one black baby. The black American baby girl was wearing a maid dress and was sad which depicts that black Americans are meant to be lower than White Americans. The campaign was trying to point out how racism is invading the world.

Many believe that racism is an issue of the past when it really isn't. It may not be as bad as it was years ago but it is still a huge issue.  The advertisement by the organization LICRA, "Your skin color shouldn't dictate your future", displays an eye opening moment of underlying racism in society that needs to be brought to everyone's attention.  LICRA is a French organization that stands for the International League against Racism and Anti-semitism.  This ad really does an amazing job at getting their point across with the tagline and photo they chose to use.

This advertisement makes a person think about what society is displaying and what racism is still occurring which appeals to a person’s sense of logos since it causes them to think logically.  Most people think that being against racism is logical and common sense, but it’s shocking to see what racism still occurs.  This is what LICRA wants to do, to raise awareness about the shocking amount of racism that is still occurring.  A lot of people are racist without even knowing it.  “Jokes” are constantly made about how Mexicans are janitors or how Muslims are terrorists or how Asians are all smart and should be nothing less than that.  The tagline of the photo is “Your skin color shouldn’t dictate your future” which seems to be common sense but it makes everyone realize that it isn’t.
