Leaving it all to come to a totally different land, culture, costumes, etc, must be very difficult. I was born and raised in NYC by two wonderful parents who both migrated to this country leaving everything behind. It was hard for both however through it all they succeeded and have obtained a lot more than what they left behind. My father came to this country about 23 years ago. He came to this country as a young adult in search of the great "American Dream". My father was born and raised in Cartagena, Colombia a place where not many opportunities are given to people due to lack of jobs. Not wanting this for this future he decided to journey to a land where people said was abundant, where life was "easier". Little did he know that to obtain that great abundance he had to start working in grocery stores during midnight hours and live in a small room. After a year and change, my mother came to the States, and a few months later she became pregnant. Living in a new country with limited about of money to barely survive, having no one but each other and expecting a child was not what they considered a dream. Many times going back to their homeland became an option. But they would remember that home opportunities where so limited so what future would their child have. Time passed my father went to college and got a job in a factory (Wonder Bread) that opened his opportunities, giving him health insurance and money to move his family to an apartment. Now having three kids my father helped my mother get into college. My mother had the burden of going to school, dealing with three kids, taking care of a house, a husband and school. Both of them worked hard and obtained careers. Today my father is a special ed/ occupational therapist and my mother is a freelance graphic designer and works as a manager in a medical office. Life here wasn't what they expected however they strived to get their "American Dream" going. Today with three kids and a granddaughter they can both say they accomplished a lot.
