It is not easy to express ourselves especially in recitations at school. One of the hindrances in building our self-confidence is language; there are people who are best in expressing their selves using the language they prefer rather than what is instructed to be used. But we should remember that we will be better if we are ready to face the reality and that reality is that, it is good that we know our mother tongue languages but it is better to also know foreign language because it can help not only ourselves but also the whole country as well. It is great that at the early stage of education the pupils are learning more about the mother tongue which we should not take for granted for it is the way we can communicate with our fellowmen and we can be recognize as a Filipino, because before we can communicate well with other nationality we should first communicate well with our Filipino brothers and sisters using our mother tongue.

The Department of Education has this Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) as a feature of the Enhanced Basic Education Program. It mandates the use of the language that the students are familiar with as a medium of instruction to allow them to grasp basic concepts more easily (DepEd, 2016). We can see nowadays that there are a lot of Filipino parents who are teaching their children foreign languages rather than their mother tongues or Filipino languages. For me, it is very brilliant that DepEd ha this MTB-MLE from Grade 1 to Grade 3 in developing the speaking, reading, and writing of the mother tongue. It is even used in all learning areas from Kinder to Grade 3 except in teaching Filipinos and English. But, if I’m asked if I am in favor of this MTB-MLE to be included in Grades 4 to 6, well I am not in favor, because for me grade 1 to 3 is enough to master or if not at least enhance the skills of the pupils in learning more about their mother tongues. Yes, the pupils can be more active in participating using only the mother tongue instead of foreign languages which other pupils at the young age will be still struggling, it will also help the pupils to build confidence that they will carry until the end, but I guess Grade 1 to Grade 3 is enough. Grade 4 to Grade 6, these is the time where they should enhance their confidence using foreign language which surely will be more used in secondary and tertiary education and even when they will face the real world outside the school. I am not saying that it is better for the pupils to focused more on foreign language, because what is use of having a longer time in learning our mother tongue if we can learn it outside interacting with others. I am being practical, MTB-MLE is very great to have it just until grade 3 because we all know our country needs to compete with others for the betterment of all and we need these young children to be ready enough.

I myself know and see that mother tongue is very effective to the pupils in terms of opening the eyes of our young Filipinos of how important our mother tongue is, practicing their confidence and interacting with others well. But, I am not in favor of MTB-MLE to include grade 4 to 6 because there are still things that the pupils should learn of give more focus instead of the mother tongue which can be learned in their everyday interactions with others like in their family or their friends. Again I am not against the inclusion of mother tongue in education but as Filipinos we should open our eyes to the reality.
