Course Description:

Psychology is the science that studies human behavior as well as the physiological and cognitive processes that underlie it; Psychology is also the profession that applies the accumulated psychological knowledge to practical problems. This course introduces some key concepts and major theories in psychology. Its topics include: the evolution of psychology, the biological basis of behavior, sensation, perception, consciousness, learning, memory, intelligence and psychological testing, motivation and emotion, human development across the lifespan, personality, stress and how to cope with stress, psychological disorders and their treatment, and social psychology.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, the students are expected to:

  1. be able to demonstrate a basic knowledge of psychology in general;
  2. have developed a critical appreciation of some important theoretical models underpinning psychological practices;
  3. be able to conduct preliminary research in psychology; and
  4. be able to explain why psychology should matter to their life and how it can be used to help them understand themselves.
