On 7th February 1994, Petrobangla entered into a contract with the China National Machinery Import and Export Corporation (CMC) on a turnkey basis. Following the completion of substantial physical works of the project at a total cost of 14298.233 million taka Taking Over Certificate was issued on 6th September 1995 to CMC. On 4th August 1998 Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL) was registered under company act. A Management, Production and Maintenance contract was signed between BCMCL and a Consortium of CMC and XMC on 4th June 2005 for a 71 months production contract that became fully effective on the 14th December 2005.

Barapukuria coal mine is the first and only coal mine in Bangladesh. It has a reserve of about 390 million tons at a depth of 118m-509m within an area of 6.68 sq.km. Recoverable deposit is 64 million tons. The coal quality is high volatile Bituminous coal.

Present Status

According to design, 1 million metric ton coal is supposed to extract from coal mine. In 2007-2008 financial year, a total of 6.77 lac tonnes of coal was produced against the target of 450 lac tonnes. As of June 2008, the cumulative production stood at 15.47 lac tonnes. From the beginning to June 2008, a total of 11,60,932 MT and 2,05,991 MT coal was sold to BPDB and other buyers respectively. Due to over stock of coal, decision was taken by the Company Board to sell the coal in the local market. Accordingly tender was floated and price was received 104.00 USD per ton. From January 2007 to December 2007, coal was produced from 1109 Longwall face and from 3,544 meters roadway development (1114 Belt gate, 1103 rack Gate & Belt Gate connecting, 1103 Track gate, Belt Gate & Open-off cut, # 1 fire fighting roadway of 1110, track extension for 1114, 1104 Belt Gate etc).
