People benefit more from travelling in their own country than from travelling to foreign countries.

According to a recent investigation from CCTV, the number of Chinese people travelling to other places, including cities in China and foreign countries such as Japan, America, Britain, has increased for more than 20% this year. This piece of news, again, leads to a heated debate about whether it’s better to travel abroad, or go to famous places in native country. From my perspective, travelling to other countries is more beneficial for us.

First and foremost, going abroad enables us know about various cultures and societies, which can broaden our horizons. If people just stay in their native country, they can only see similar cultures with their hometowns. Local people, languages, traffics, housings, sceneries and food may all be very similar. However, when visiting foreign countries, visitors will have the opportunities to know about different customs and people. For instance, even in some really close country, such as Japan and Korea, the local accessories, daily diets, traditions can all be very different. Therefore, more unique and unfamiliar information can be known and learnt through travelling to foreign countries.

Secondly, our skills of speaking foreign languages could be greatly enhanced when travelling abroad. As we go overseas, we will have a lot more chance to communicate with foreigners in their language. Many philosophers, researchers and scientists had done many investigations showing that an appropriate linguistic environment is the most important factor to master a second language. Even if a person studies the vocabularies and grammars very hard, he cannot truly demonstrate proficiency in communicating with other people in foreign language without practicing in a specific speaking environment. During our trip, we need to interact with people when we are booking hotels, buying commodities, ordering food, and so on. Thus, we can not only enjoy a pleasant journey, but also, meanwhile, practice our speaking skills of one or more foreign languages.

Admittedly, it doesn’t mean that domestic tourism is not beneficial at all. Travelling in our own nations also benefits us in many ways. We can know about different cultures of our own countries, as well as undergo different living environments.  Trips are usually shorter contrasting to going abroad. The communication is much more convenient and the price is much cheaper than travelling overseas. However, in countries such as China, there are usually too many people in domestic scenic spots. Places like the Palace Museum, the Great Wall are extremely crowded during holidays. In this way, it seems a lot better to travelling abroad and enjoy an agreeable holiday.

To conclude, since more vocation days are allowed these years, travelling becomes more and more common for civilians, in both developed and developing countries. My personal preference is travelling overseas. However, we need to create the most satisfying travelling plan for ourselves due to many different considerations, so that the vocation can be more enjoyable and meaningful.
