Harriet Tubman's Greatest Achievement

Harriet Tubman did many great things in her life, but these are some of her greatest. Harriet Tubman cared for and freed slaves and people in need over the course of her life.

Harriet Tubman cared for many people in her lifetime. According to Sarah Bradford's Scenes in the life of Harriet Tubman, Harriet Tubman served as a nurse for the survivors of the 54th Massachusetts Volunteers after the historic Columbia River Raid. Harriet worked, day after day, till late at night; then she went home to her cabin, and made about fifty pies, a great number of gingerbread, and two casks of root beer to sell in the camp. According to Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, after the Civil War over the course of the next forty-eight years people sick and poor in her house, which was always full of people in need. In doing this she showed her devotion to the people in need showing leadership and care through her actions.

Harriet Tubman freed many slaves over the course of her life putting her life in great danger. Kate Clifford Larson's Bound for the Promise Land, There are a couple of maps showing the routes taken by Harriet Tubman showing the Underground Railroad, and the distances and stopping points of Harriet Tubman's journey to freedom. These maps suggest that the ultimate final destination of the journey was in St. Catherine's, Canada. A chart adapted from Catherine Clinton's Harriet Tubman: The Road to Freedom suggests that Harriet made eight trips to free slaves, freeing a total of thirty-eight slaves. These trips show her courage and devotion to freeing these people although there were not as many saved as at the Combahee River Raid. The Combahee River Raid was led by Harriet and eight other black spies, freeing a total of 800 slaves in a single night! The saving of these slaves, to me, was much more significant than the care giving given after the civil war. Although both were very important the freeing of these people to a lot of bravery and nerve, going down into the south where she had a bounty on her head, and leading these slaves to freedom had much more of an impact on the country to me.

Harriet Tubman did many great things in her life, but these are some of her greatest. Harriet Tubman cared for and freed slaves and people in need over the course of her life.
