Hugo Chavez - His life in pictures

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez is deceased. That is vice president Nicolas Maduro said Tuesday in a televised speech. The socialist president had been ill for some time. He suffered from cancer. Tuesday was known to very bad went with Chávez.

The flamboyant Chavez, in power since 1999 and always prominent in the media, since it was the last surgery to his illness in Cuba no longer seen in public. End of January were still pictures arranged which Chávez was shown, along with two daughters. The Venezuelan president was only 58 years old.

His youth

Hugo Rafael Chávez Frías was born on July 28, 1954 in Sabaneta (Barinas) in Venezuela. Both his parents were teachers and alongside Hugo had six other children. Because his family was so poor, Chávez was raised by his grandmother, Rosa Inés.

Chavez was an exemplary student, who loved baseball and art. After high school he moved in 1971 to the Military Academy of Venezuela, where he rose to lieutenant-colonel.

1992: The coup

In 1982 Chavez founded the Revolutionary Bolivarian Movement-200 and he began to work on a political agenda that was based on a nationalist and revolutionary ideology.

In February 1992, he and four other lieutenant-colonels coup on the constitutional government of Carlos Andres Perez. The coup was assisted by uprisings in different parts of the country, the provincial government of Marcaibo managed to throw down. The rebellions were however held in Caracas, making the army Miraflores house finally could not take. "I take full responsibility for the Bolivarian Movement on me," Chavez said after he publicly surrendered to the authorities.

Chávez was, along with the other leaders of the revolt, captured. A year later, President Carlos Andrés Pérez deposed by Congress and took his rival Rafael Caldera's presidency on that Chávez eventually pardoned.

In 1998, Chávez, leader of the Movement of the Fifth Republic, participated in the presidential elections. He won the election with 56.2% of the votes and was formally appointed president in 1999. Immediately after his appointment he organized a referendum for its fixed term of office and the Constitution of 1961 to change something he had promised during his election campaign. In 2000 he organized re-election and he made sure that his term of office and remained valid until 2007.

Venezuelan oil

Venezuela Chavez had its economic growth due to the export of hydrocarbon. The Constitution of 1999 ratified the monopoly of the national oil company PDVSA on the commodity. Afterwards there was a law passed that all oil companies were tied to those of the state. This combined with the high oil prices gave Chávez enough profit to the state to fund and promote social programs and housing plans to promote.

The oil was also the only foreign policy. It ensured a prominent place in OPEC (Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries) and strengthened ties with countries such as Cuba, Nicaragua and Argentina.

The Bolivarian Revolution

On April 14, just two days after the coup, Chávez was released and resumed his post as president of Venezuela.
