Amy Goldwasser's goal in writing this essay is to create sympathy for teenagers, who use the Internet and take advantage of the technology, and illustrate how they are being wrongly attacked. She comes across the topic of concern about the computers, cell phones, text messaging, iPods, and instant messaging and how they affect young teenagers' lives. She thinks highly of the doors the internet has opened to teenagers and says that the internet has expanded kids' minds when it comes to school and themselves. Kids tend to know more than the previous generation because they have easier access to information by using the internet. She insists that, they are about 33 million Americans who are fluent in texting, e-mailing, blogging, IM'ing, and constantly amending their profile on social network site, they are spending an average of 16.7 hours per week on the internet which she sees as educational. She also maintains that people think the internet is a bad thing, but it really isn't because it's causing kids to write and read more than they normally would. She claimed that by having the internet, teenagers have unlimited access to any information from all over the world. They could use this for educational purposes and to do better in school. Teenagers can use the internet to easily get connected to social networks, like facebook and myspace and there they can learn about new things going on around them. She finished by saying that we need to start trusting our kids to communicate as they will online and stops regarding the internet as a villain, and presenting it as the enemy of history and literature and knowledge, that our teenagers have the potential to become the next great voices of America through in the internet.
