Women's lives changed in many ways during World War II. As with most wars, many women found their roles, opportunities and responsibilities expanded. Husbands went to war or went to work in factories in other parts of the country, and the wives had to pick up their husbands' responsibilities. With fewer men in the workforce, women filled more traditionally-male jobs. In the military, women were excluded from combat duty, so women were called on to fill some jobs that men had performed, to free men for combat duty. Some of those jobs took women near or into combat zones, and sometimes combat came to civilian areas, so some women died. About 70,000 Australian women served in one of the women's auxiliary services - Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF), Australian Women's Army Service (AWAS), Women's Royal Australian Naval Service (WRANS) and Women's Land Army (AWLA) (which was not considered a full service at the time). Women's services were unique to the Second World War. There was a lot of effort spent trying to recruit women for them and about 6000 women who joined served overseas. Many women who served described the experience as a highlight of their lives. Women's roles in World War 2 were very important. Their jobs were to sew clothes for the army people in the war and o make good food for them. If they didn't make good food they would starve to death. They also worked in factories riveting, welding and being cool. In Australia in World War 2 many women demanded to be more directly involved in the war effort. They joined voluntary organisations, where they learnt new skills which would have been valuable if the war reached Australia. Women's were trained in areas such as air raid precautions, first aid, military drill and skills such as shooting, signalling, driving and mechanical work. More women joined the workforce and the government encouraged this. There were organisations such as The Women's Land Army, Australian Women's Army Service etc. They helped with poor for soldiers and that sort of behind the scenes work that helped greatly.

Some of women's roles in WWII were just staying at home to keep the kids safe. Some of the women's roles were to go and fight in the war.
