Should the U.S. continue to use capital punishment is a really good question. In my opinion it should not be done away with I also feel that once the decision has been made to use capital punishment on an individual it should not take years to impose this sentence. There are several reasons for my opinion the first being the of taxpayers money being used to take care of men and women who have committed heinous crimes. They have shown a blatant disregard for human life. Their victims were not given a second chance why should they? Capital punishment has been around since biblical times. The first testament even states; but if damage comes to her let life be given in payment for life. Exodus21:23 Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot. Burning for Burning, wound for wound, blow for blow. Exodus 21:24-25. Most religions have opposing sides to capital punishment, both sides can support their views with teachings or writings from their respective books, be it the Torah, the Bible, or the Koran. In the Bible the first testament is very much for punishment befitting the crime, as you can see from reading Exodus 21. The book of Matthew in the second testament gives the turn the other cheek philosophy. Four states in the last two years have changed the law in their states to include forms of sexual abuse on a minor. I am for this as well, I believe that if there were more states that took this view then maybe crimes against children would be committed less. In doing research states that have statutes for capital punishment had a lower rate of murder. In Oregon in 2007 the murder rate was 1.7 for every 100,000 people. In Michigan for the same year the rate was 6.7 for every 100,000 people. Michigan did not have a have a death penalty statute at the time and Oregon did. This would seem to indicate that capital punishment or the death penalty helps to deter some from committing this type of crime. In some cases it may in others it may not. Let the punishment fit the crime, if you murder someone intentionally then you should be put to death by the laws that regulate capital punishment.
