Comparative Drama Matrix

Fill in the matrix below, in which you will analyze the characterization, dramatic irony, plot, and conflict in Oedipus Rex and A Raisin in the Sun. Then, answer the question below the matrix.

Oedipus Rex A Raisin in the Sun

Characterization In Oedipus Rex the main character is one of great power, power that is given be choices he has made and will make. It is also power given by the other characters in the selection, because, in reality what give a "God or Goddess" their power is that people who worship them and follow them. Without the other characters in this selection seeking him for guidance and leadership he would not be the all-powerful being that he thinks he is. In A Raisin in the Sun, every character is greatly related to another so much so that the story wouldn't be successful without them.

Dramatic Irony The irony of the play is that even though Oedipus Rex's father found out that his son would try to kill him, so he abandoned him somewhere, they still came into contact with each other and he still ended up being killed by his son, who ends up marrying his widowed mother.

The irony of the play is that Walter lee, wants the money to open a liquor store, to "get rich quick" but the money ends up getting stolen, so instead he "gets poor quick". Very ironic.

Plot The plot is simply put, Oedipus doesn't know that he is the cause for the hardship that has fallen on the land, because he killed the King, and he won't listen when he is told otherwise. Money is the root of all evil. Mama doesn't like the idea's her son has for the money for religious reasons, because drinking and alcohol is bad, and in the end the money is stolen by a bad man.

Conflict A major conflict in the selection is that he believes himself to be the son of the Theban King and Queen, when in reality he is the son of the slain Corinthian King, whom he unknowingly murdered, and then he declares that the killer shall be banished, again not knowing that he is the killer, this resulting in he own banishment

The conflict that is very prevalent from the beginning of the play is that everyone involved has their own idea as to where and how the insurance check should be spent. Logically one person thinks their idea is better than the others, but no one takes in to consideration that it is mama's money, and mama will do with it what she sees fit.
